With 2017 being such a successful year for a large number of directors, producers and the entertainment industry as a whole, it would be a ridiculous idea to expect anything less than that in 2018. Movie fanatics all across the world are bound to tune in to watch their favorite movie release of the year, with almost every director incorporating a brand-new storyline to keep the hype going. However, a lot of people still might find themselves complaining about the fact that they simply do not have a lot of movies coming into the box office that aren’t repetitive or feature the same storyline as ones that they have seen prior to the new ones. Nonetheless, there are a lot of good new movies that are coming out this year that are definitely going to amaze you with the storylines and the overall performance of the filmmaking team. Although there are many movies available for streaming online, a great majority of people often find that they’ve seen every movie that would have interested them even a bit. This, of course, leads to the confusion of what to watch when you’ve got more than just a few hours of time on your hands. 1. Hereditary – Directed by Ari Aster
If you’re a fan of horror movies that keep you up at night due to how realistic they appear on screen, this one’s definitely a must-watch for you. Contrary to a storyline that is seen in almost every other horror movie, Hereditary focuses on the life of an artist named Annie, played by Toni Collette, who specializes in constructing intricately devised miniatures of her life, who later begins to communicate with the dead. The movie carries on to unfold the number of experiences that the artist experiences as a result of the ability she has developed which has enabled her to interact with ghosts and the dead. Director Ari Aster has definitely proven that they are among the best names currently in the industry!
2. The Notion – Directed by John Thimothy
Highlighting not only a very delicate subject in India but exposing a lot in the process of doing so as well, The Notion is definitely one of the few movies that have managed to shed some light on matters that are normally kept out of the limelight. Director John Thimothy, who is also the president and chief executive officer of the Regina International Film Festival and Awards (RIFFA), put his heart and mind into the making of his first short film. Although a live action short film, the movie covers the story of a former NSG commander and the survivor of a Mumbai terror attack who committed suicide unpredictably after almost a decade. The wife of the man, who is also a renowned writer, is hesitant to provide additional information to the authorities upon questioning. It is definitely one of the few movies worth watching this year!
3. The Ritual – Directed by David Bruckner
Another unusual movie on the list is The Ritual which is directed by David Bruckner. The storyline is focused on an extensively digitized world where a group of middle-aged men happen to find themselves lost in the middle of the woods while on a hiking trip. Although it might sound like a story that has been covered several times before, it is anything but that as it unfolds the story and scary incidences that the group of men come across. The horrifying experience that these men go through is one that is certainly going to have you shaking. The Ritual is also available on Netflix for all those who love to do their binge-watching on a reliable platform like that. It’s the kind of movie that would literally make you rethink your entire plans of setting foot on a weekend getaway type of adventure!
4. Breaking In – Directed by James McTeigue
This movie is one that will not only have a lot of mothers relating to the love for their child, but it will also highlight a lot of aspects about how difficult life can get as a single mother. The movie uncovers the story of a woman of color and how she has to save the lives of her family members when they face a home invasion. Director James McTeigue has definitely proven that he knows what a good movie really requires. The mother in the movie also faces a series of problems when she’s trying to protect her young from the crazy intruders. This movie is definitely worth watching this year with your family or even alone! Remember to keep your doors locked! Short films often don’t get the deserved attention and business but they give an opportunity to anyone who wants to say something to the society with limited resources.
